Face Mask - Do’s and Don’ts
Face masks are a vital proven part of staying safe during the COVID-19 pandemic. But not all masks are created equal and if you don’t handle and wear your mask properly, it won’t protect others around you
Why is a face mask important?
A face mask helps block respiratory droplets from being sprayed into the air wen you talk, breathe, cough or sneeze. That’s important because people can spread the virus days before they feel sick.
The main goal of a mask is to prevent you from spreading the virus to other people.
Your mask protects other people. Other people’s masks protect you
Tips for mask use
There are many different types available, ranging from surgical and medical through to basic cloth ones available in retail stores which are becoming the most commonly seen and used by the public. These are typically made with elastic loops and the better quality ones have several layers of fabric. These can be washed with regular washing detergent and warm water
Make sure it fits: Your mask should be comfortable and should not restrict your breathing. It needs to fit snugly though, especially around your cheeks and the bridge of the nose
Tip: If your glasses fog when you’re wearing your mask, your mask does not fit well. Too much air is escaping
Don’t fidget with your mask: Many people manipulate their masks a lot. It should be treated as if it’s dirty (which it may be). If you feel you need to reposition it, wash your hands first
Wash your hands before you put your mask on: You should also wash your hands when you take the mask off. Don’t touch the front of the mask, which is the area which is most likely to have surface germs. Remove the mask by the ear loops
Take it with you: Don’t leave home without a mask. Keep several clean ones in your car, bag or backpack
Don’t pull your mask down to talk: It’s sometimes hard for people to hear you when you talk with a mask on. But removing your mask to speak defeats the purpose. If you are talking to someone and within two metres of that person, keep your mask on
Physical distancing and sanitising: Remember, wearing a face mask is not the total solution to containing COVID-19 – it is a key part of the overall strategy which includes social distancing, frequent hand washing and sanitising and remaining at home unless absolutely necessary to go out
and finally.
Wearing a mask sends a positive message and shows you care for others
